After the first anniversary of BRC20 and Ordinance, on the third day, Domo announced a new governance structure for BRC20.
Layer 1 Foundation (L1F), founded by BRC20's creator Domo and friends, excitedly announced an organizational adjustment to the governance structure of BRC20, including the appointment of several leading BRC20 indexers as partners, such as Hiro, ALEX, Oyl, Allium, and UTXO Management. Additionally, Unisat and BestinSlot will serve as the joint primary maintainers of the BRC20 protocol in the future.
In addition to supporting BRC20, L1F is also committed to providing public tools, educational resources, and an open forum for developers building various meta-protocols on Bitcoin. They envision achieving a decentralized economy on Bitcoin and supporting this vision through non-profit open-source development and education.
Review of the governance disputes of BRC20
Interestingly, despite Unisat's fame for collaborating with Domo to develop the first BRC-20 indexer, they had previously disagreed with Domo on the issue of whether BRC-20 should follow the Ordinals upgrade.
On January 2, 2023, Domo, the creator of BRC20, retweeted UniSat's statement committing to the Jubilee upgrade, stating, "Considering the serious consequences and valuation involved, I believe these rushed updates to BRC20 are reckless, disregarding peer indexers, and may harm the overall interests of the BRC20 user base."
Domo believed that integrating the new updates into the BRC20 standard was a complex matter and that without a robust testing, coordination, and validation infrastructure under development, these changes could be unsafe. He even bluntly stated that UniSat's actions were not just a one-time technical push, but part of UniSat's thoughtful and ongoing strategy to control the BRC20 protocol.
However, after 3 days of discussions, on January 5, BRC20 creator Domo announced on social media that consensus had been reached with UniSat and others. The agreed-upon path forward includes: 1. Adopting ord 0.14 version (i.e., agreeing to the BRC-20 following the Ordinals upgrade); 2. Temporarily disregarding Casey's latest proposed Vindications, which can be enabled in the future; 3. Addressing extreme scenarios raised in the Vindication PR; 4. Disregarding the issue of proxies/coding.
It is reported that a charm called "vindicated" was added in the Vindication PR, aiming to prove that only minor changes to ord are needed to support BRC-20 indexers who wish to update to the new version of ord later, by allowing them to temporarily ignore inscriptions with the "vindicated" charm before updating to the new version.
The upgrade of BRC20 governance is inevitable
Evidently, the previous disagreement had a profound impact on the governance structure of BRC20.
The new governance rules formulated by Layer 1 Foundation (L1F) may be precisely to address similar governance disputes, ensuring that the future development of BRC20 proceeds smoothly within a more transparent and stable governance framework. Layer 1 Foundation (L1F) stated that over the past few months, designing a transparent governance structure for BRC20 and ensuring the protection of users' crucial interests in the future development and reliability of the protocol is paramount, especially considering the exceptionally complex task of designing governance structures for index-based protocols (not connected to blockchain consensus mechanisms), which presents numerous challenges and flaws.
For index-based protocols like BRC20, designing a fair and flexible governance structure is a daunting task. Therefore, in order to ensure the future development and reliability of the protocol, Domo's formulation of governance rules is crucial, and the upgrade of BRC20 governance is inevitable.
By appointing leading BRC20 indexers as partners, such as Unisat and Best In Slot, L1F can integrate more professional knowledge and resources to drive the development and maintenance of the protocol. This will help increase the transparency of governance, reduce centralization risks, and ensure the long-term healthy operation of the protocol. Additionally, this may also be aimed at increasing Domo's influence in the governance of BRC20. By setting standards and appointing primary maintainers, Domo and L1F may have a more direct impact on the future direction and decisions of the protocol, affecting the stability and long-term development of the BRC20 community.
