Microsoft and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based artificial intelligence (AI) firm, G42, announced on Sept. 17 the establishment of two new centers in Abu Dhabi to advance their “collective Responsible AI goals.”

The first center will identify, develop, and advance best practices and industry standards for using AI in the Middle East and the Global South. It is co-founded and funded by Microsoft and G42 and has the endorsement of Abu Dhabi’s Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council (AIATC). The second center, Microsoft’s AI for Good Research Lab in Abu Dhabi, will support AI projects that address important societal goals.

Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, characterized the establishment of the centers as an important milestone in the quest to broaden access to safe AI.

“Today’s steps will add to the important progress Microsoft and G42 are making to broaden access to the responsible, safe, and secure use of artificial intelligence. We are committed to additional steps with G42 that advance responsible AI use for customers and that strengthen the relationship not only between our two companies but between our two countries,” the Microsoft President said.

Peng Xiao, CEO of G42, said his firm’s partnership is helping to create “a framework for AI to serve all of humanity.” Xiao added that the two centers are helping to position Abu Dhabi as a global hub for AI innovation that “prioritizes safety, trust, and collaboration.”

The statement said G42’s $1.5 billion partnership with Microsoft, launched in April, prohibits the UAE firm from conducting business with any entity listed on the U.S. Government Consolidated Screening List. To ensure compliance, Microsoft and G42’s compliance committee meets quarterly. Additionally, the two teams conduct weekly progress reviews.
