🇨🇦🇺🇸 A Canadian businessman will serve 41 months in U.S. federal prison after pleading guilty to obstruction of an official proceeding. Firoz Patel failed to disclose 450 bitcoins in a 2020 trial and was sentenced to 36 months for operating Payza, an unlicensed crypto payment platform.
Patel attempted to hide his cryptocurrency proceeds by transferring them to Binance, which led to further legal trouble. He deposited the bitcoins with another exchange, which later froze his account. 🔒
In an effort to avoid prosecution, Patel and an accomplice impersonated an attorney and engaged in fake negotiations with the U.S. Attorney's Office. Their plan was to flee to Canada after Patel's release, but investigators uncovered the scheme. Patel has been in custody since June 2021.
