Please! Don't compare Trump and Hoover!
Hoover is often regarded as one of the worst presidents in American history, even being considered the "maker" of the Great Depression.
Current mainstream views point out that he introduced three policies in 1931: 1) raising tariffs in an attempt to protect the American manufacturing market; 2) expelling immigrants to reserve job opportunities for citizens; 3) significantly cutting taxes in hopes of stimulating the recovery of industry and manufacturing. However, these measures had little effect, and some believe they exacerbated the later global Great Depression and even the outbreak of World War II.
But this evaluation is now misunderstood. In the 1930s, America was a trade surplus country, and as a global manufacturing and exporting powerhouse, the Great Depression had already begun with the stock market crash in 1929, not directly triggered by Hoover's policies. On the contrary, his conservative policies attempted to alleviate the crisis to some extent, rather than create the depression. The context at the time was that the global economy was already in chaos; Hoover's tariff policies (such as the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act) did exacerbate the contraction of trade, but they were not the root cause of the depression.
Today, the economic environment in the United States is completely different, facing trade deficits and deindustrialization, with a large influx of global goods into the U.S. Therefore, it is inappropriate to directly compare the policies of the Hoover era with the current economic policies of Trump, as there are significant differences in economic foundations and historical contexts. Comparing Trump and Hoover is either a deliberate attempt to confuse right and wrong or a result of limited understanding.
