Binance Impersonation Scam Targets Australian Crypto Investors

Australian law enforcement has warned crypto investors to be cautious of scammers impersonating Binance. In a statement jointly issued with the National Anti-Scam Centre (NASC) and Binance Australia, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said an alert has been sent to more than 130 potential victims.

The statement indicated that the potential victims were identified through messages found on an unnamed end-to-end encryption platform. The messages, which appear to be sent by a Binance representative, inform victims of a “breach” of their accounts. To make the scam look legitimate, the scammers include fake verification codes in the messages.

If any of the targeted users fall for the scam by calling a provided support phone number, the scammers would instruct them to transfer their funds to a “trust wallet” they control According to AFP Commander of Cybercrime Operations Graeme Marshall, once the scammers gain control of the funds, they are immediately moved through a series of wallets, diminishing recovery prospects.

Marshall stated that the law enforcement agency, along with its partners, has ensured that any Australians targeted by these scammers are immediately made aware of the situation. He added:

Anyone who received an SMS or email warning from the NASC must take it very seriously. If you have already transferred your cryptocurrency to a so-called trust wallet, report it to your bank or digital currency exchange immediately, then to police via ReportCyber, quoting the reference number AFP-068.

Catriona Lowe, Deputy Chair at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, urged users to verify all communications, including those from trusted organizations. Meanwhile, Jimmy Su, the Chief Security Officer at Binance Australia, advised investors to use the cryptocurrency exchange’s verification tool. Su also reminded users never to share important information, such as seed phrases.

“Never share sensitive information like your seed phrase or transfer funds under pressure. If in doubt, stop and verify through official sources,” the CSO said.
