Valve has removed a game titled Piratefi from its online store Steam after it was discovered to be embedded with malware. Security researchers, including Marius Genheimer from SECUINFRA Falcon Team, revealed to Techcrunch that the malware was designed to trick gamers into installing an info-stealer known as Vidar, which can extract sensitive data such as passwords, session cookies, and cryptocurrency wallet details. Genheimer noted that Piratefi was likely a modified version of an existing game template, allowing hackers to deploy the malicious software with minimal effort. The Vidar malware has been linked to various cybercriminal activities, including attempts to deploy ransomware. The origins of Piratefi remain murky, as its developers, Seaworth Interactive, have no discernible online presence.
