President Trump announced the suspension of the executive order that enacted additional tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports. Trump revealed that diplomatic talks with these states were successful in devising a way of attending to the U.S. worries regarding the migrant border crisis and the fentanyl epidemic hurting hundreds of thousands of citizens.

Trump first announced that he had discussed the situation with his Mexican counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum, reaching an agreement that satisfied the administration’s requirements. Via social networks, Trump stated:

It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States.

Trump stressed that the negotiations would continue, pausing the imminent 25% tariff implementation for 30 days.

Later, Trump also revealed that a similar agreement had been reached with Canadian authorities. The agreement involves an investment of $1.3 billion to reinforce border security, creating a completely new plan that includes locating nearly 10,000 in problem areas, alongside the purchase of new helicopters and technology.

Prime Minister Trudeau declared:

Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the Border, launch a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.

This also granted the Canadian government a 30-day suspension of the tariff regime implementation. After this, the subject will be re-evaluated following the implementation of the measures.

Nonetheless, no arrangement was reached with China, who instead retaliated against Trump’s 10% tariffs with tariffs of its own. The Chinese Finance Ministry announced a new set of levies affecting U.S. products, adding 15% to the prices of imported coal and gas, and 10% to oil, farm equipment, trucks, and some big sedans.

These countermeasures would start being applied on February 10, giving the two governments time to avert this upcoming trade war.
