BRICS, an economic bloc comprising emerging nations, remains unfazed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to levy 100% tariffs on goods from member states, according to Russian Ambassador Sergey Tolchenov. Speaking to the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday, Tolchenov highlighted BRICS’ financial independence and its resilience against external pressures, including U.S. warnings. He emphasized the bloc’s ability to manage internal matters, such as exploring cross-border payments or a potential common currency. Trump warned in November that such tariffs would target BRICS countries if they distanced themselves from the U.S. dollar. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin clarified that BRICS is currently focusing on using national currencies and creating secure tools for economic collaboration, rather than forming a shared currency.
