The Ethereum ecosystem seems to be facing a discussion about how its development has become slow, with developers of the Ethereum Foundation leading the way in this criticism.
Jesse Pollak, head of Base, the Coinbase-incubated L2 network, publicly stated that the current development roadmap lacked aggressiveness and that the updates slated for 2027 need to happen in early 2026.
Dankrad Feist, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation known for Proto-Danksharding, also criticized Ethereum’s current position. Feist noted that the current growth plan was not enough for Ethereum to keep evolving as an ecosystem.

“So finally we are talking about how the current plan is just way too unambitious. If Ethereum wants to win, we need to be ambitious,” he assessed.
Feist tackled several critical points regarding Ethereum’s processes. He acknowledged that the current upgrade procedures were broken and that builders needed long-term commitments to capacity to build their projects on the blockchain.
He also rebuffed the notion that scaling could only happen in L2 platforms, the way that Ethereum chose to scale its capacity. “This is a complete ivory tower perspective,” he recognized, stating that while it had limits, scaling Ethereum’s base layer 100-1000x in a few years was possible.
He declared:
I think actually doing this and stopping to find excuses for not doing it is essential for Ethereum winning.
This scaling and upgrading roadmap debate comes after President Donald Trump and the First Lady chose to launch their meme coins on Solana, one of Ethereum’s rival networks.
This has brought an influx of new early adopters to the ecosystem through Solana, which has a very different scaling approach, choosing to aim its efforts to scale on its base platform.
