Argentina to Define Its Crypto Path in Upcoming Legislative Elections

Argentina is nearing a crossroads that could define its crypto legislation in the future. The legislative elections, set to take place this year, will shape the crypto industry’s future, which currently faces many challenges in the country.

The party led by President Javier Milei, La Libertad Avanza (Freedom Advances), envisions using Bitcoin as part of a multi-currency competition scheme. Ramiro Marra, a regional deputy, believes that a system allowing citizens to make everyday purchases with bitcoin can be implemented.

Other parties have also made proposals regarding bitcoin. Last year, Martín Yeza, a member of the PRO party, introduced a bill to amend current central bank regulations to allow the central bank to add bitcoin to its reserves.

The Central Bank of Argentina can only hold easily liquidated assets, including gold, dollars, and other fiat currencies.

While other parties haven’t shown a determined stance on crypto, analysts believe that it could be a key issue in the upcoming elections.

Pablo Navarro, an international analyst, believes that the crypto issue is still far from the concerns of the average politician. “I think it is essential that they modernize. They must learn (the majority) and incorporate tools such as cryptocurrencies, blockchain, and Web3 into the debate,” he stressed.

“I have no doubt that voters take this into account and it will have an impact at the time of the election,” he remarked, given the high level of cryptocurrency adoption in Argentina.

The Central Bank of Argentina still has an active ban on the participation of banks and payment providers in the cryptocurrency system, preventing them from launching crypto services. This prohibition was established before Milei took office, but has not been lifted yet, so it might also be a consideration for the next Congress, even when the bank has stated that this will be lifted once a crypto-normative is established.
