Blockchain hardware manufacturer Canaan announced the launch of the Avalon Mini 3 at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. The Avalon Mini 3 is a 37.5 TH/s Bitcoin miner that also works as a home heater.
The firm said in a statement on Wednesday that it designed Avalon Mini 3 to "democratize" crypto mining for individuals, allowing users to simultaneously mine bitcoin and warm their living spaces via heat recycled from the mining process, thus offsetting energy costs and reducing environmental impact.
Canaan previously launched the compact Avalon Nano 3 device in July 2024. While the Avalon Nano 3 is also a small portable heater, its more modest 4 TH/s capacity meant it was only suitable for small-scale Bitcoin mining and to warm users’ immediate surroundings like a desk.
The firm claimed that the Avalon Mini 3 has sufficient hashrate and power output to generate enough heat to effectively warm larger living spaces, making it more practical as a combined heater and mining device for residential use.
While less powerful than some of the leading hashrate machines on the market, the app-controlled Avalon Mini 3 device also offers a sleeker design compared to conventional Bitcoin miners, providing a quiet and energy-efficient solution for enthusiasts.
Canaan also unveiled an upgraded version of the Avalon Nano 3, the Avalon Nano 3S, with a hashrate of 6 TH/s, designed to serve as an affordable, portable and “beginner-friendly” Bitcoin mining device.
"We are committed to making Bitcoin mining accessible to everyone," Canaan founder and CEO NG Zhang said. "The Avalon Mini 3 and Avalon 3S represent our vision of user-friendly, practical mining solutions for the modern individual.”
The Avalon Mini 3 and Avalon Nano 3S are currently available on preorder for $899 and $249, respectively.
The Avalon Mini 3 represents an evolution in Canaan's product line, focusing on integrating Bitcoin mining with practical household applications. While Canaan is not the only hardware manufacturer to enter the Bitcoin mining home heater market, it is the largest so far.
Heatbit began shipping its dual-purpose devices in 2022, while several third-party companies and DIY enthusiasts have also adapted Bitmain's machines, notably the Antminer S9 and S17 models, to serve dual purposes as both Bitcoin miners and heaters.
“We're reimagining how technology can create value while minimizing environmental waste,” Zhang added. “The Avalon Mini 3's ability to generate cryptocurrency while heating your home is a perfect example of our vision for sustainable, multi-purpose technology."
