A Keystone resident lost $6,000 in bitcoin in a phone scam in which a scammer claimed the victim had missed jury duty. The scammer also attempted to steal another $4,000 in bitcoin but was stopped by county deputies. The incident, which occurred Oct. 27, is the latest in a series of phone scams targeting county residents. Local authorities are investigating and advising residents to be cautious. In some cases, scammers have issued fake arrest warrants and demanded payment in bitcoin or wire transfers to clear the charges. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office warns that its deputies will never call anyone to notify them of an arrest warrant and then offer to clear it in exchange for gift cards.
