During a meeting in Dubai, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasized his intent to elevate relations with Russia to a strategic partnership, Tass reported Tuesday, quoting the WAM news agency.

Sheikh Mohamed’s discussions with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu covered “further steps to strengthen cooperation and further joint work,” particularly following the UAE president’s official visit to Russia for the BRICS summit in Kazan, the news outlet conveyed. The two leaders also discussed a variety of international and regional topics, including the Ukrainian crisis, signaling deepening ties in the face of shared geopolitical interests. Shoigu’s visit to Abu Dhabi on Oct. 28 comes amid Russia’s ongoing dialogue efforts, including potential avenues for peace in Ukraine.

In a related development, Saudi Arabia has shown interest in mediating talks between Russia and Ukraine, according to Saudi Ambassador to Moscow Abdulrahman Bin Suleiman Al-Ahmed. Al-Ahmed was quoted as saying, “Saudi Arabia is willing to facilitate mediation efforts to engage all parties involved,” stressing that the Kingdom is supportive of initiatives to ease the Ukraine conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously indicated openness to Saudi Arabia hosting peace discussions, commending Riyadh’s strong relations with Moscow.

Highlighting the longstanding partnership between the nations, Ambassador Al-Ahmed noted that “such cooperation enhances bilateral relations and opens new avenues for promoting peace and stability.” He added that the strategic ties between Russia and Saudi Arabia reflect “the aspirations of their peoples,” underscoring the potential for a prosperous future based on diplomatic collaboration.
