Vitalik Buterin Calls out Ethereum Foundation Critics—’Show Some Respect’

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum and the architect of much of the first smart contracts-enabled network today, took to social media to justify the Ethereum Foundation’s action in the face of recent backlash.

Commenting on the next steps that would enable universal L1 and L2 client verification for Ethereum and its rollups, Buterin had to answer criticisms about his alleged personal sales of ETH, stating that his holdings had increased this year. When the argument pivoted towards the Ethereum Foundation and its sales of ETH, Buterin defended the organization, justifying its recent ether sales.

Buterin answered directly, stating that the foundation paid researchers and developers in charge of several key developments, including changing from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, low onchain fees, and reducing transaction inclusion times achieved with EIP-1559.

Other improvements referenced by Buterin included account abstraction tech, Zero Knowledge (ZK) tech implementation focused on privacy improvements, security work, new programming libraries, and a zero downtime record since 2016. Finally, He called critics to “show some respect” for the foundation’s achievements.

Buterin’s statements come after widespread criticism of the Ethereum Foundation, which racketed up ether sales recently. Apart from selling 100 ETH recently, a Spot On Chain disclosed that the organization had sold 4,066 ETH for $11.2 million at an average price of $2,760 throughout 2024, including 300 ETH sold in September and other smaller weekly sales.

While ether has underperformed other assets this year, institutions have propped up the chain’s value as a solid contender in the space, boasting the largest numbers of developers and active users compared to its competitors. In a memo disclosed last month, Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan called Ethereum the Microsoft of blockchains, stressing that while “everyone wants to talk about newer companies and their disruptive technologies, like Google, Slack, and Zoom, Microsoft is still bigger than all of them combined.”

Writer’s take: It’s good that crypto founders remind holders and users of the work being done behind the scenes to keep innovating and maintaining the infrastructure of a chain working. However, holders should also be able to criticize the actions of the institutions responsible for these tasks and be heard. Balancing these two is an effort that every crypto foundation must achieve.
