A group of football stars are about to face legal actions from users scammed in a billionaire pyramid scheme operation. According to Spanish sources, promoting Omegapro, a pyramid scheme that raked in over $3.2 billion since 2020, can make footballers and former football stars liable for promoting a fraudulent platform.

The group of stars includes names like Figo, Vinicius, Ronaldinho, Casillas, Puyol and others. Most deny being involved with Omegapro and explain they were part of promotional games for the company due to connections with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government.

Omegapro offered investments that advertised 300% yields delivered in 14 months when it started operating in 2020. The company later changed these terms, alleging it would provide the same yields over 16 months. The period grew to 26 months in 2022, and then in November the platform allegedly experienced a hack, stopping payments and leaving users without their funds.

Many of Omegapro’s customers said that they invested in the company due to the endorsement of these players. A woman identified as Dolores declared:

How could it be a scam? The footballers were involved and the company logo was projected onto that skyscraper in Dubai!

Two Omegapro co-founders, Robert Velghe and Andreas Szakacs, are under the custody of Turkish authorities. However, another two co-founders remain at large.

Lars Olofsson, the attorney leading the group lawsuit against these stars, vehemently stated he would act against all involved in promotional events. “All football players who have been seen at Omegapro events will be sued by us in London,” he stressed.

While celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Floyd Mayweather have faced similar actions for their promotional activities regarding cryptocurrency platforms, experts allege that these demands might not have a future in Spain.

Writers’ take: Even if these demands do not yield any gain for the users behind these legal actions, it can serve as a wake-up call for celebrities to think twice before promoting or associating with a cryptocurrency brand they don’t know. The standard for this kind of endorsement should be to check the legality of the platforms involved and then be part of any campaigns destined for their promotion. Sadly, this is not always the case.
