DMG Blockchain Solutions, a blockchain and data center technology company, signed a memorandum of understanding with Malahat Nation’s Economic Development Corporation to jointly build artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. The planned 30-megawatt project will be split equally between DMG’s facility in Christina Lake and Malahat Nation’s infrastructure on Vancouver Island. Both parties have committed to sourcing clean energy, aligning with British Columbia’s environmental goals.

The announcement detailed that the project aims to foster Indigenous-led development, with the Malahat Nation holding a controlling stake in the partnership. DMG has committed to ensuring that at least 10% of the workforce at the Malahat site will consist of Indigenous employees, particularly focusing on youth apprenticeships. Additionally, Malahat Battery Technologies, a partnership between Malahat Nation and Energy Plug Technologies Corp., will supply battery systems to support the energy demands of both data centers.

DMG explained it will be responsible for developing and managing the AI data centers. The company has stated that the centers will be built with resilience to handle future processing needs for various client projects. However, the completion of the project remains contingent on securing necessary approvals, completing due diligence, and signing a definitive agreement between the parties.

Once finalized, DMG believes the initiative is expected to contribute to the local economy and provide long-term benefits for Indigenous communities. DMG and Malahat Nation said the organizations share a vision of combining technology and sustainability, emphasizing the project’s potential to foster economic growth while preserving cultural heritage.
