Sky’s Rune Christensen Reveals Star Allocation Proposal—and Possibly a Return to the Old Maker Name

Makerdao founder Rune Christensen began by discussing the “successful” launch of the USDS stablecoin, which reached a total supply of 1 billion within two weeks. He attributed this success to growing demand from new users while maintaining the stability of DAI’s 4.7 billion supply. He emphasized that the rapid adoption of USDS proves the effectiveness of native token rewards in attracting new users and driving growth in the Makerdao ecosystem now referred to as Sky.

Further expanding on the ecosystem’s progress, Christensen noted that USDS has been integrated into key defi protocols like Aave, Ethena, and Morpho, with additional integrations planned. These integrations, according to Christensen, represent the beginning of a long-term strategy to position USDS as a major player across layer two (L2) networks and layer 1 (L1) blockchains such as Solana. He sees these achievements as key indicators that the system is set up for sustained innovation.

A major focus of Christensen’s announcement was the introduction of the Star Allocation System Framework, designed to guide the autonomous governance of “stars” like spark. The framework will enable stars to deploy USDS collateral into both defi and traditional finance (tradfi) opportunities, fostering flexibility while maintaining safeguards against risk. Christensen acknowledged that this framework would evolve through community feedback and practical experience as it is implemented.

In response to feedback from the Makerdao/Sky community, Christensen proposed another potential rebranding of the protocol, which could even see a return to the original Maker brand. He recognized that while the new Sky brand has had notable successes, many in the community continue to trust the Maker brand, which has become synonymous with stability and security in the defi space. Christensen presented three options for the rebrand: continuing with the Sky brand, transitioning back to the original Maker brand, or introducing a refreshed version of the Maker brand that aligns with current developments.

The final direction will be determined through a series of governance polls and community discussions, with Christensen urging the community to participate. These polls will also address related questions about Makerdao’s tokenomics and the future of the Sky token. No matter the outcome, Christensen stressed the importance of ensuring a smooth transition for all users, with a focus on maintaining the integrity of the user experience and keeping the protocol’s core functionalities intact.
