Freedom Factory has launched Dgen1, a mobile device billed as the first onchain everyday carry (EDC) for simplifying crypto interactions on the latest Ethereum operating system, ethOS v4.0. Also known as the Ethereum Phone, the mobile device has built-in system-wide support for crypto features like a native wallet, a light node, and a crypto messenger.

Unlike other devices susceptible to censorship by giant tech firms, Freedom Factory said its devices allow users to leverage onchain apps without intermediaries or hidden charges. The device also includes a decentralized applications (dapps) store that supports Ethereum and Layer 2 (L2) apps.

Commenting on the launch of this groundbreaking device, Markus Haas, co-creator of Dgen1 and CEO of Freedom Factory, said:

Crypto is no longer confined to desktop and browser applications, on-chain is now seamless. By integrating Ethereum at the operating system level, the dGEN1 removes the friction and complexity of crypto interactions, offering an experience that’s secure and free from the limitations imposed by traditional platforms. The future of on-chain is seamless, and it’s now in your pocket.

Some of the defining features of the EDC include L2 support for faster transactions and an integrated crypto messaging system for secure communication within the onchain ecosystem. Dgen1 phones also come with an on-board light node for transaction validation and enhanced security.

In a video post shared on X, Freedom Factory, backed by industry leaders like Balaji Srinivasan and Vitalik Buterin, said giant corporations have taken the fun out of technology. However, by launching freedom-enhancing devices or technologies like Dgen1, tech firms like Freedom Factory aim to help freedom-loving users restore hope in technology.

According to the post, Freedom Factory is now accepting orders for Dgen1 phones and expects to start shipping in the spring of 2025.
