#a16z Co-founder Pushes for Federal Employee Return to Work#

a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently said on a podcast that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is planning to push for an increase in the number of days federal employees work in the office. He noted that federal office buildings in Washington, D.C., are currently only at 25% occupancy on average. He pointed out that many federal employees work in the office only one or two days a month, with some even working in the office only two days in two months. Andreessen questioned whether this model meets the requirements of federal employee status and noted that DOGE has come up with "innovative ideas" to cut government spending and optimize regulations. He believes that the current prevalence of remote work poses challenges to work efficiency and questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office. Previously, Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy suggested cutting $2 trillion in spending by reducing government waste, but the plans are currently still in the suggestion stage. Reports show that only 6% of federal employees work regularly in the office, and Musk has pointed out that the percentage of employees who work full-time in the office may be as low as 1% after accounting for security and maintenance personnel. Andreessen also said that he is currently an "unpaid volunteer" for DOGE and that he supports Trump because of the Biden administration's crackdown on cryptocurrencies.
