#a16z co-founder pushes for federal employee return to office#

Marc Andreessen, co-founder of a16z, recently discussed the focus of the US government's Department of Efficiency and Effectiveness (DOGE) on a podcast. He stated that the department is aiming to increase the number of days federal employees work from the office, noting that Washington D.C.'s federal office buildings currently have an average occupancy rate of just 25%. He pointed out that many federal employees only work from the office one to two days a month, with some even going as long as two months before spending two days in the office. He questioned whether such a model aligns with the requirements of being a federal employee.Andreessen also mentioned that DOGE's focus includes optimizing staffing, cutting government spending, and streamlining regulations, stating that the team has "very smart ideas" in these areas. He further questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office and suggested that the current prevalence of remote work presents challenges to productivity.Previously, former Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy proposed cutting $2 trillion in "government waste." Reports show that only 6% of federal employees regularly work from the office. Musk further pointed out that, excluding security and maintenance personnel, the percentage of employees working full-time in the office might be as low as 1%.
