a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently discussed the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on a podcast, stating the department plans to push for an increase in the number of workdays federal employees spend in the office. He also questioned the prevalence of remote work, suggesting it poses a challenge to productivity. He pointed out that federal office buildings in Washington, D.C., currently have an average occupancy rate of just 25%, with many employees working from the office only one or two days a month, and some even working from the office just two days in two months. Andreessen also mentioned that DOGE's focus includes optimizing staffing, cutting government spending, and streamlining regulations, adding that the team has "very smart ideas" in these areas. Previously, former Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy had proposed cutting $2 trillion in "government waste," with reports showing that only 6% of federal employees regularly work in the office. Musk further pointed out that excluding security and maintenance personnel, the proportion of employees who work full-time in the office could be as low as 1%. Earlier reports suggested that Andreessen is an "unpaid volunteer" for DOGE, siding with Trump after the Biden administration cracked down on cryptocurrencies.
