According to the Anti Tariff Statement website, numerous renowned economists, including two Nobel laureates in economics, have jointly issued a statement opposing the large-scale unilateral tariff measures implemented by the Trump administration through executive orders since taking office in 2025. The statement criticized the policy for repeating the protectionist mistakes of the Smoot Hawley Act of 1930, distorting the market, harming consumer interests, and violating free trade and constitutional principles. The statement calls for a return to the founding values of "peace, commerce, and honest friendship". Currently, the "Anti Tariff Declaration" has received joint support from over 1368 academics and policy figures.
