China plans to regulate the disposal of seized cryptocurrencies, with amounts involved exceeding 430 billion yuan last year
According to Reuters, China is discussing the establishment of rules for handling seized cryptocurrencies in response to the increasing number of cryptocurrency crime cases. According to informed sources, lawyers are discussing rule changes with senior judges and police, which may soon alter the handling of confiscated virtual currencies.
Data shows that in 2023, the amount of cryptocurrency related crimes involved in China reached 430.7 billion yuan (approximately 59 billion US dollars), a tenfold increase compared to the same period last year.
Currently, due to the lack of unified regulations, local governments mainly dispose of seized cryptocurrencies in overseas markets through private companies. Experts suggest that this approach may conflict with China's current cryptocurrency ban, and all parties are close to reaching a consensus that it is necessary to allow judicial institutions to recognize cryptocurrencies as assets and develop unified disposal procedures.
