Quantum computing research company Project Eleven has launched the "Q-Day Award" challenge, offering a reward of 1 Bitcoin (approximately $84000) to the team that successfully cracked the Bitcoin encryption algorithm using a quantum computer within one year. The challenge objective is to use Shor algorithm to crack the ECDSA signature mechanism used by Bitcoin, in order to quantify the actual threat posed by quantum computing to Bitcoin security. The company estimates that approximately 6.2 million bitcoins (about $500 billion) worldwide may be at potential risk. (TheBlock) https://www.
