According to Decrypt, the US branch of the World Food Programme currently accepts donations in over 80 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC, as well as donations in ApeCoin, BONK, and Dogecoin. This collaboration is part of the broader goal of raising $25 million through the Emergency Hunger Relief Fund by the US branch of the World Food Programme, aimed at filling the funding gap in the "Lifetime Assistance for 58 million people on the brink of hunger" program.
After the Trump administration stopped funding the United Nations emergency food aid program for 14 impoverished countries, including Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen, the organization began seeking new donations. Dorota Amin, Chief Charitable and Partnership Officer of the World Food Programme USA, stated that the non-profit organization is seeking modernization and added, "The traditional aid system is under tremendous pressure. Embracing new technologies such as blockchain and cryptocurrency is not only a choice, but also a necessary step." She said that as global humanitarian budgets shrink, the hunger crisis is intensifying, and accepting cryptocurrency donations allows the organization to "integrate into a growing, mission oriented, and transformative group of individuals.
