ChatGPT sees a surge in users in India but lags behind in revenue

According to TechCrunch, although India has become one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT, OpenAI still faces challenges in monetizing locally. Data shows that since 2023, Indian users have only spent about $8 million through in app purchases, far lower than the $330 million spent by American users. The high subscription fee ($20/month) and the lack of local pricing are considered the main reasons. OpenAI is seeking to collaborate with Indian telecommunications giant Jio to expand its coverage and achieve its vision of "billions of users".
