Stablecoin issuer Circle disclosed in its initial public offering (IPO) filing that it acquired the remaining 50% stake in Centre Consortium from Coinbase for $210 million worth of stock in 2023. The Centre Consortium was once a consortium for issuing USDC stablecoins, jointly operated by Circle and Coinbase. After the completion of the transaction, Centre became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Circle and was dissolved in December 2023, with its net assets transferred to another wholly-owned subsidiary of Circle. Coinbase announced in August 2023 that it had acquired equity in Circle through a new partnership agreement, but did not disclose details of the equity transaction.
