Is the old public chain reborn? Can Sonic Labs, formerly known as Fantom, usher in a wave of explosion 🔥?
In the DeFi world, led by the renowned AI expert Andre Cronje, the new algorithm can achieve a stable APR of up to 200%? 🌬️
What did Fantom's transformation go through? How to participate in the Sonic Points Program? The following is a story about Fantom 👇
Fantom's history: from glory to decline
Fantom is a smart contract platform based on DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph), born in 2018, aimed at promoting the development of decentralized finance (DeFi) through high-performance and low-cost blockchain technology. In 2021, coinciding with the DeFi craze sweeping the globe, Fantom rose rapidly with its fast transaction confirmation and low transaction fees.
At its peak, Fantom's TVL (total lock up value) reached as high as $8 billion, becoming a dark horse in the Layer-1 public chain and attracting the attention of a large number of users and developers.
However, the good times did not last long. With the changes in the market environment and the intensification of competition, Fantom's brilliance is gradually fading. In 2022, the DeFi field will face a cold winter, with problems such as liquidity depletion and project runaway emerging one after another.
At the same time, Andre Cronje, one of Fantom's core developers and DeFi legend, announced his temporary withdrawal due to regulatory pressure. This event added insult to injury, causing a setback in Fantom's ecological confidence, a sharp decline in TVL, and a continuous erosion of market share by emerging public chains. The former celebrity project seems to have reached a crossroads of development.
Why Transform Sonic Labs? Opportunity for change
Faced with technological bottlenecks and market pressure, the Fantom team realized the need for a thorough upgrade. In 2024, Andre Cronje returns and serves as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Sonic Labs, driving the transition from Fantom to Sonic Labs. This change is not only a technological innovation, but also a strategic positioning adjustment.
In October 2023, Fantom Foundation announced its Sonic upgrade plan for the first time; On August 2, 2024, it was officially renamed Sonic Labs and plans to launch the Sonic Chain mainnet in December 2024. This marks a brand new chapter for Fantom.
In addition to the technical aspect, Sonic Labs has recently brought native USDC onto the chain and launched Sonic Pay debit cards, which can be used to consume USDC through Apple Pay or Google Pay. This shows that Sonic Labs is beginning to enter the PayFi field.
It is worth mentioning the DeFi ecosystem of Sonic Labs. I have heard that there are many very innovative DeFi gameplay options on Sonic Labs, and I am planning to study them carefully at some point.
Who is Andre Cronje?
Andre Cronje is a legendary figure in the field of decentralized finance (DeFi), known as the "Satoshi Nakamoto" of the DeFi world. He is best known for founding Yearn Finance, an automated revenue aggregator launched in the summer of DeFi in 2020. This project greatly propelled the development of the DeFi ecosystem, with its native token YFI soaring from $31 to $95000, creating a myth of instant wealth.
In addition, he co founded Fantom and became the "Ethereum killer" with its innovative Lachesis consensus mechanism. Andre is known for his outstanding technical talent and innovative spirit, but his career has also been controversial, such as the failures of the Eminence and Solidly projects that resulted in user losses, causing his reputation to fluctuate.
Nevertheless, he returned in 2024 as the CTO of Sonic Labs, leading the Fantom technology transformation and continuing to lead the design and development of the Sonic network, with a focus on building a new native bridging technology called "Sonic Gateway" that will greatly enhance the security and convenience of transferring assets from other chains such as Ethereum to Sonic.
Meanwhile, AC also released its vision for Sonic this year on X:
-Monetization of fees (90% of transaction fees will enter the application instead of validators and MEVs)
-Cost subsidy (eliminating barriers to entry fees for users)
-Dynamic transaction fees (applications can set fees for users)
-Native economy and account abstraction (without wallet or transaction fees)
Mainly focused on two points:
-Make it as easy as possible for users to try out applications launched on Sonic (removing all barriers to entry and use)
-Assist application developers in earning substantial profits.
Recently, AC posted on X stating that the team has made technological breakthroughs in the field of algorithmic stablecoins, but past cycles have left them with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTS), and it is uncertain whether this plan should be implemented.
But according to the details revealed, the annualized rate of return (APR) can exceed 200% when the TVL is stable at $10 million; When TVL is 100 million US dollars, APR is about 23.5%; When TVL exceeds 1 billion US dollars, APR will remain stable at around 4.9%.
It can be seen that AC is still a "treasure sword", and we can look forward to more innovative gameplay on Sonic in the future.
S token airdrop plan released, how can retail investors participate in Sonic?
Sonic Labs will officially launch its S token airdrop program in 2025, where users can earn points by interacting with decentralized applications (dApps) on the Sonic platform. These points are directly linked to the approximately 200 million S tokens airdropped by the Sonic ecosystem plan, and users earn corresponding token shares by accumulating points.
The distribution of Sonic Points adopts a multi season structure, with the first season ending in June 2025. This long-term reward mechanism aims to encourage users to continue participating, rather than a one-time event.
How to earn Sonic Points?
At present, there are roughly three types of points:
-Passive Points: Holding designated assets (such as scUSD, scETH) can automatically earn points, suitable for lazy people.
-Activity points: You can earn points by trading or providing liquidity on the Sonic platform, which is twice as fast as passive points and suitable for active users.
-APP points: Participate in dApps activities on the Sonic platform, rewarded by developers, suitable for people who love to try new things.
