By 2024, the Bitcoin holdings of listed companies will double, with an increase in holdings exceeding the total of the previous five years

According to Cryptoslate citing data from Bitcoin Treasury, the number of bitcoins held by listed companies in 2024 reached 592112 BTC. Bitwise research director Ryan Rasmussen emphasized that this number is twice the total amount of Bitcoin accumulated by various institutions over the past five years. On January 1, 2024, the listed company held 272777 BTC in Bitcoin. There were two significant accumulation leaps in 2020 and 2021. In the first year of the COVID-19 epidemic, institutions held nearly 100000 bitcoins. In the second year, this number increased significantly as companies held over 200000 bitcoins. However, as the listed company realized some of its Bitcoin reserves, this momentum was temporarily interrupted, almost falling below the threshold of 200000 BTC. The increase in holdings will resume in 2023 and sharply increased last year. It is worth noting that Rasmussen pointed out that if Strategy's reserves are excluded, this number will be "greatly reduced". The company is led by Michael Saylor and as of March, it holds over 499000 BTC in its vault, which increased by 257095 BTC through 16 purchases last year. Rasmussen added that as of March 6th, listed companies held $52 billion worth of Bitcoin, equivalent to 3% of the total Bitcoin supply. In 2024, there has also been a significant increase in the amount of Bitcoin held by institutional investors. As of December 31, 2024, private companies, ETP managers, governments, and listed companies hold 2802135 BTC, compared to 1622439 BTC at the beginning of last year. This growth is mainly attributed to the government and ETP managers. At the beginning of last year, governments around the world stored 90379 BTC in their vaults, and by the end of the year, this number had grown to 513791 BTC. At the same time, the amount of Bitcoin held by asset management companies increased from 771013 BTC during the same period to 1289031 BTC, while the amount of Bitcoin held by private companies decreased from 488270 BTC on January 1, 2024 to 407201 BTC at the end of last year.
