The latest investigation by the Korean Audit and Inspection Commission (BAI) shows that a civil servant in Cheongju City, South Korea, embezzled 497 million Korean won (approximately 342000 US dollars) of public funds for personal cryptocurrency investment and debt repayment. The official forged documents and stole the mayor's seal to open a bank account in the name of the city hall, and embezzled funds through the account. According to the investigation, his embezzlement activities lasted for nearly 6 years (from November 2018 to May 2023), including the misappropriation of funds including a large amount of flood restoration donations. The official was sentenced to 5 years in prison in December last year, and the case is currently under review by the High Court. The verdict may be extended or overturned. (Decrypt) https://www.
