The Benelux countries have been partners for a long time. So it was great to be in Luxembourg today to speak with Prime Minister @LucFrieden 🇱🇺 and Prime Minister @Bart_DeWever 🇧🇪. The main topic of discussion was the war in Ukraine. It is very clear that Europe needs to shoulder its responsibility in this regard. That means we have to keep supporting Ukraine. We also need to invest much more heavily in European defence and the defence industry. Security and economic stability go hand in hand. That is why we need to keep debts sustainable.
We also spoke about strengthening EU competitiveness. A strong Europe requires a strong economy. This is especially important for the Benelux, as the gateway to the rest of Europe. Finally we also discussed cross-border matters like combating crime, fostering police cooperation and tackling migration.
I thanked Prime Minister Frieden for his warm welcome today. In these turbulent and uncertain times, it is crucial to work closely with trusted allies.
