In fact, I have been following the @ weRoamxyz project for a long time. My initial impression was that Roam would be an ascetic on the DePIN track, as the difficulty of covering WiFi hotspots worldwide can be imagined. But recently, I have seen many friends sharing their good experience of using eSIM cards to roam and connect to the internet overseas. My first reaction is that DePIN may not be as slow as I imagined? Below, let me briefly share my views:
1) Whether the successful deployment testing or large-scale application of eSIM cards requires a series of technical engineering prerequisites, including user device adaptation, network communication node quantity and distribution, network operator data service integration, network bandwidth performance optimization, and more.
So, this is not just a matter of landing a product or service, but the "mature" landing of a series of complex technologies, communications, and network services. Especially for projects with longer growth cycles like DePIN, the implementation of the application, accompanied by continuous growth in user experience, user numbers, market share, and other data, is the beginning of a DePIN project truly building a moat. So, the successful launch and landing of eSIM cards is very important for Roam, and it is also a landmark event announcing the official launch of its project;
2) Of course, behind the acceleration of Roam's application implementation, it is thanks to its rapidly developing node group. According to incomplete statistics, as of now, its global cumulative coverage nodes have exceeded 2.1 million, surpassing projects such as Helium and HIvemapper in the same field. The reason why its nodes can develop so rapidly is mainly due to two reasons:
1. Low threshold participation mechanism: Helium requires a dedicated mining machine worth hundreds of dollars, while Hivemapper relies on a specific dashcam. In contrast, Roam only requires users to start with a Rainer MAX30 router for less than $200, and even directly use their existing WIFI devices at home to become nodes.
This low threshold hardware participation method allows Roam to have a very wide range of participants. In order to minimize user costs to the greatest extent possible, Roam has also collaborated with RWA project @ humafinance to launch a borrowing method that uses income repayment, further reducing the cost threshold for user participation;
2. Positive Flywheel of Token Model: Prior to TGE, users can earn points to exchange tokens through behaviors such as check-in, node contribution, or invitation. After TGE, tokens can be converted into points and burned to earn more tokens for arbitrage. Through the combustion pool and reverse combustion pool, both points and tokens can be deflated, ensuring the long-term stability of their value.
Through a series of reward and subsidy mechanisms, Roam will attract more users to participate in node deployment and network construction. The larger the user and network scale, the stronger its service capabilities, and the stronger its network revenue capabilities, which will drive token value growth and achieve a positive flywheel effect. Moreover, after its eSIM card is launched, it will have a good community reputation spread effect, which will further accelerate the impact of the positive flywheel;
3) The DePIN track was previously highly anticipated by the market due to its use of decentralized innovation mechanisms, low-cost deployment and operation, and efficient resource integration to achieve a centralized and scaled infrastructure similar to the real world. Especially in the fields of distributed storage, computing, and communication, DePIN has significant advantages over CePIN in terms of privacy, cost, and token economy models, and is considered the most important narrative in the future web3 field.
So, DePIN is a track that is currently developing slowly but will be very important in the future. But this also means that DePIN projects like Roam have longer market development expectations and growth potential. Compared to the narrative of strong hype and disappointing expectations in the web3 field, a DePIN narrative with application implementation, continuous operational data growth, and ultimately significant "practical" value deserves more patience and long-term attention.
