It makes little sense for the sovereign at the center of the monetary system, who issues the global money freely and intends to keep doing so, to weaken its claim to that role by elevating harder forms of money. It makes more sense for a smaller nation or one on the periphery of the system to be attracted to gold or possibly bitcoin for external optionality and for potential profits.
