Cryptocurrency trading platform Bybit said that hackers stole $1.5 billion worth of cryptocurrency Ethereum from the platform on the morning of the 21st, which may be the largest cryptocurrency theft in history. According to a statement from Bybit cited by Agence France Presse, hackers took control of an offline wallet on the platform by exploiting a security protocol vulnerability during transactions, transferring hundreds of thousands of ether coins stored in it to an unknown address. Ethereum is a cryptocurrency with a market value second only to Bitcoin. After the news of the theft on the 21st came out, the market value of each Ethereum coin was 2641.41 US dollars, a decrease of about 4%. Bybit has over 60 million users worldwide and provides a variety of cryptocurrency services. Bybit claims to hold approximately $20 billion worth of Ethereum from its customers and promises to compensate them even if the stolen Ethereum cannot be recovered. The statement said, "All customer funds are safe. Our operations are proceeding as usual and have not been disrupted." The Bybit security team and relevant experts have launched an investigation, and it is still unknown who the perpetrator is. The amount of Ethereum stolen this time is huge, far exceeding the highest amount in previous Bitcoin theft cases. Xinhua News Agency
