SafeMoon Chief Technology Officer Thomas Smith pleaded guilty to two charges of securities fraud conspiracy and telecommunications fraud conspiracy in Brooklyn federal court. The maximum sentences for these two charges are 25 years and 20 years respectively. Previously, in November 2023, the US Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission filed charges of securities and telecommunications fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy against Smith, SafeMoon CEO Braden John Karony, and founder Kyle Nagy, accusing the three of falsely claiming to investors that the liquidity of the SafeMoon (SFM) token was locked and inaccessible, but in fact they were able to access it and misappropriated over $200 million in funds for personal purposes such as purchasing luxury cars and real estate.
