Indian authorities seized nearly $190 million worth of cryptocurrency while investigating the Bitconnect Ponzi scheme. The scam was uncovered in 2018, resulting in approximately $2.4 billion in losses for 4000 investors in 95 countries/regions worldwide. Bitconnect was launched in 2016 and went bankrupt in 2018. Founder Satish Kumbhani was charged by the US Department of Justice in 2022 for alleged fraud. At the same time, the Indian law enforcement agency arrested a man named Shailesh Babulal Bhatt on suspicion of kidnapping and extortion, involving $144 million in cryptocurrency crimes.
