The CFPB exaggerated charges against companies to make headlines and impose fines. The more corporations they turned into “criminals”, the more money they extracted.
This is the same failure mode as for-profit prisons, which led to the kids-for-cash scandal, where judges received kickbacks for jailing teens.
And it’s also the same failure mode as traditional law enforcement, whose abuses of civil forfeiture grew rapidly under the Obama administration.
In all three cases, the cop became the robber.
