According to multiple media outlets including Fortune, David Balland, co-founder of the well-known French cryptocurrency company Ledger, and his wife were successfully rescued after being kidnapped on January 23. The kidnappers demanded payment of ransom in cryptocurrency, and some of the funds were paid but subsequently tracked and frozen.
Event details:
On January 21st, Balland and his wife were kidnapped from their home in the Cher department of France and taken to different locations.
The kidnappers contacted another co-founder of Ledger to demand ransom, some of which was paid in cryptocurrency.
The French gendarmerie special forces GIGN intervened and rescued Balland on January 22, and found his wife the next day.
During the kidnapping, Balland suffered a hand injury and is currently hospitalized for treatment. His wife has not suffered any physical injuries but is receiving psychological monitoring. The police have arrested 10 suspects, all between the ages of 20 and 40, most of whom have criminal records. If the kidnappers are found guilty, they may face life imprisonment.
Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier expressed gratitude for the swift action taken by law enforcement and emphasized the need to further strengthen security measures.
