According to a new Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) put forward by Ethereum Foundation researcher Dankrad Feist, the gas limit of the Ethereum mainnet could theoretically increase by 100 times, allowing for a transaction volume of up to 2000 transactions per second.

Feist, who named the blockchain "danksharding" data storage solution, proposed EIP-9698 on April 27, which will introduce a "deterministic gas limit growth plan" at epoch 369017 (around June 1).

The proposal plans to gradually increase the gas limit by 10 times over approximately two years (i.e., 164250 epochs), followed by a final 10-fold increase.

Feist stated that Ethereum clients need to vote on the proposal for it to take effect.

He added, "By making a predictable exponential growth pattern the default setting for clients, this EIP encourages a sustainable and transparent trajectory for gas limit development, which aligns with expected improvements in hardware and protocol efficiency."

In blocks primarily consisting of simple transactions, Ethereum currently occasionally reaches 20 transactions per second (TPS). If the gas limit is increased by 100 times, it could theoretically boost Ethereum's TPS to 2000. Feist's proposal would allow Ethereum to better compete with Solana, which currently has a non-voting transaction processing capacity between 800 and 1050 transactions per second, with a theoretical TPS of up to 65000.

The EIP proposal would expand the current gas limit from 36 million to 3.6 billion, potentially allowing Ethereum blocks to accommodate around 6000 transactions.

This new proposal was made by Feist after Ethereum validators agreed to raise the gas limit from 30 million to 36 million in February.

Prior to this, the last adjustment to Ethereum's gas limit occurred during the London hard fork in August 2021, when the figure roughly doubled from 15 million to 30 million.

Feist acknowledged that rapidly increasing the gas limit according to his proposal could put pressure on less optimized nodes and increase block propagation time.

He stated, "However, adopting a very gradual incremental exponential plan for each epoch provides node operators and developers with ample time to adapt and optimize."

EIP-9698 marks the latest effort by the Ethereum community to enhance the scalability of the base layer after focusing primarily on scaling through layer 2 solutions in recent years.

Critics of Ethereum's focus on layer 2 strategies argue that this approach has fragmented the ecosystem into several poorly interoperable independent chains, leading to a worse user experience.

Ethereum developers also plan to test a 4-fold gas limit increase under EIP-9678 in the Fusaka hard fork.

Fusaka is expected to launch by the end of 2025, while Ethereum's next major upgrade, Pectra, is scheduled to go live on the mainnet in May.
