The Layer 2 (L2) blockchain network Soneium, developed by Sony Blockchain Solutions Lab, has announced that it has reduced its blockchain finality time by over 98% to tackle one of the biggest challenges in blockchain scalability.
The Japanese Web3 adoption alliance Astar, connecting Astar Network and Soneium, has announced a strategic partnership with AltLayer and EigenLayer to launch the "Fast Finality Layer" of the Sony L2 blockchain.
In blockchain settlement, finality refers to the guarantee that a transaction is irreversible, which occurs after the transaction has been added to a block in the blockchain ledger.
The new finality layer provides cryptoeconomic security guarantees through a decentralized network of validators, reducing reliance on centralized orderers and enabling more secure cross-chain interactions.

According to an announcement shared with Cointelegraph, this could reduce Soneium's transaction finality time to under 10 seconds, a 98% reduction compared to the 15-minute finality time achieved through Optimism's OP Stack.
The new validator network will be secured by re-staked Ethereum (ETH) and Astar (ASTR) tokens.
Maarten Henskens, head of the Astar Foundation, stated that reducing blockchain finality time is crucial for enabling more advanced decentralized finance (DeFi) use cases and improving the experience for developers and users, as finality delays for most solutions range from 15 minutes to several days.
He told Cointelegraph that this new collaboration is "an important step towards secure, fast, and cross-chain interoperability." He added:
"This is a fundamental improvement in user experience and trust: users no longer have to wait or 'double-confirm' whether a transaction will be reversed, and developers can confidently build real-time, interactive applications without worrying about finality delays."
"This milestone is just the beginning—the larger story of how fast finality will reshape developer user experience, DeFi, and cross-chain experiences is unfolding," he added.

According to L2beat data, Arbitrum One is currently the fastest blockchain, with an average finality time of 1 minute, the same as Coinbase's L2 network Base, both relying on Optimism's rollup technology.
AltLayer CEO YQ Jia stated that resolving blockchain finality remains the biggest barrier to mainstream Web3 adoption.
"By combining EigenLayer's re-staking with MACH validation and support from Astar Network, we are creating an infrastructure that provides the best of both worlds—Ethereum's security guarantees and near-instant finality," Jia said. "This is exactly the solution needed to bring blockchain technology to mainstream adoption."
Since its launch, EigenLayer has been committed to driving mainstream blockchain adoption.
In February 2025, EigenLayer and the blockchain protocol Cartesi launched a new initiative aimed at finding the next key consumer application prototype, exploring new use cases that could drive mainstream cryptocurrency adoption.
