Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken announced on April 8 that it has partnered with Mastercard to issue cryptocurrency debit cards in the UK and Europe.
This collaboration will allow the cryptocurrency exchange to expand its payment services by launching physical cryptocurrency debit cards.
The partnership comes as Kraken continues to seek licensing under the EU regulatory framework—the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).
The debit card will allow users to spend cryptocurrencies and stablecoins directly. Kraken stated that issuance will begin in the coming weeks, and customers can now join the waiting list.
Kraken mentioned that the partnership with Mastercard is built on the rapid growth of Kraken Pay, a new tool that enables customers to send funds from their Kraken accounts.
Launched in January this year, Kraken Pay allows users to send over 300 types of cryptocurrencies to multiple countries worldwide. It also introduced a payment link feature that allows users to send payments via a simple URL.
Since the service launched, over 200,000 customers among Kraken's 15 million users have activated Kraktag, a unique user identifier that allows users to receive funds without exposing their full bank account information.
"Cryptocurrency is changing the payments industry, and we see a future where global commerce and everyday payments are powered by cryptocurrency," said Kraken's co-CEO David Ripley in a statement shared with Cointelegraph.
"Our customers want to be able to seamlessly use their cryptocurrencies or stablecoins to pay for real-world goods and services," he added:
"The partnership with Mastercard is an important step in realizing this vision. Together, we will unlock the true everyday utility of cryptocurrency, ensuring it remains undeniably relevant and usable in the long term."
