ChatGPT creator OpenAI has introduced rate limits after a viral trend on social media that has "Ghiblifyed" almost everything—transforming it into AI art in the style of the famous Japanese animation studio.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was one of the earliest participants in this trend, posting a model-generated portrait of himself on March 25, but stated in a follow-up post two days later that all image requests had begun to put pressure on the company's infrastructure.
"It's super interesting to see people love the images in ChatGPT, but our GPUs are melting. We will temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work to make it more efficient," he said.

"In addition, we have rejected some generation requests that should have been allowed; we are working to fix these issues as soon as possible," he added.
On March 25, OpenAI launched an upgraded image generation feature in ChatGPT-4o, leading to a massive sharing of images created in the Ghibli studio art style on social media—the studio is known for its animated films "Spirited Away" and "My Neighbor Totoro."
Altman did not provide a clear timeline for how long the rate limits would last but stated, "I hope it won't be too long! Free users of ChatGPT will soon get three generation opportunities per day."
According to OpenAI, rate limits are typically used to help manage the overall load on its infrastructure.
"If there is a significant increase in requests to the API, it can put pressure on the servers and lead to performance issues. By setting rate limits, OpenAI can help maintain a smooth and consistent experience for all users," OpenAI stated on its rate limit explanation page.
In addition to a large number of followers, X platform and Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared an image mimicking the scene of Mufasa lifting a Shiba Inu from Disney's "The Lion King."
White House AI and cryptocurrency czar David Sacks also joined in, using the Ghibli studio art style on an image of himself at an event.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported on March 26, citing insiders, that OpenAI expects its revenue to more than double this year, reaching $12.7 billion.
Altman stated on February 12 that his company hopes to launch GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 in the coming weeks or months.
