1. The GENIUS Act in the U.S. May Pose Risks of Dollar Privatization

The U.S. Senate Banking Committee has voted to pass the GENIUS Act, a bill regulating stablecoin issuers, clearing the way for the adoption of stablecoins as a means of payment outside the cryptocurrency trading space. However, this bill may trigger potential privatization of the dollar and increase the risk of de-dollarization, as it allows stablecoin issuers to operate without the same federal consumer financial protection measures that apply to credit cards and peer-to-peer payment platforms. They can also invest in money market funds, repurchase agreements, and uninsured bank deposits, which were bailed out during past financial crises, thereby indirectly affecting the dollar. Data shows that the proportion of the dollar in global foreign exchange reserves has dropped from over 70% in the early 21st century to below 60%. -Original
