A company that sells smartwatch face designs through NFTs has sued LVMH, accusing the luxury fashion group of patent infringement.

Watch Skins filed a lawsuit on March 10 in a federal court in Texas, alleging that LVMH stole its "groundbreaking NFT display technology."

Watch Skins claims it developed a unique system that allows users to display verified NFT artwork on smartwatches and holds multiple patents related to the technology.

It alleges that TAG Heuer, a watch brand under LVMH, and other products from the group illegally used NFT display technology covered by three patents owned by Watch Skins.

LVMH is a multinational holding company that owns dozens of well-known luxury brands, including Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, TAG Heuer, Tiffany, Christian Dior, Hennessy, and the champagne brand Moët & Chandon.

Watch Skins states that its first patent involves a system that verifies ownership before allowing NFTs to be displayed on the watch face, the second patent involves a system that requires verification of NFTs through a blockchain wallet before displaying them on a smartwatch, and the third patent focuses on retrieving and displaying customized watch faces based on NFT ownership.

The company claims that TAG Heuer encourages customers to infringe on the patents by providing instructions on how to use its NFT display features.

It explains: "If the NFT belongs to the user's crypto wallet, the watch allows the display of the NFT and connects to the user's crypto wallet to ensure the authenticity of the displayed work."

Watch Skins is seeking a jury trial and damages for lost profits and royalties due to the infringement, and is asking the court to order LVMH to cease further use of the patented technology.

The company announced the launch of the world's first blockchain NFT watch face marketplace at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in 2020.

At that time, Watch Skins stated that the mobile application enables consumers "to purchase authentic, licensed smartwatch faces from their favorite brands."

Cointelegraph has contacted LVMH for comment.
