The Liberal Party of Canada has announced that former central bank governor and long-time Bitcoin critic Mark Carney will take over as Prime Minister of Canada and plans to counter the recent tariff policies introduced by the United States.
In the election on March 9, Carney won by a landslide, succeeding Justin Trudeau, who had served as Prime Minister for over seven years.
Carney served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, before crossing the Atlantic to serve as the Governor of the Bank of England for seven years. In a local media interview on March 1, he stated that he has initiated the process to renounce his British and Irish citizenship to fulfill his duties as Prime Minister of Canada.

Carney has long held an opposing stance on Bitcoin (BTC). As early as March 2, 2018, he stated that Bitcoin's fixed supply cap leads to "serious flaws."
"If those who forget history are doomed to repeat it, then attempting to reconstruct a global virtual gold standard is a criminally forgetful act regarding monetary history."
During his tenure as Governor of the Bank of England, Carney stated in a speech about the future of money that Bitcoin's fixed supply has led to a speculative frenzy worldwide and has spawned a multitude of new cryptocurrencies. He believes that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have proven to be "unreliable short-term stores of value."
"If you borrowed £1,000 in student loans through Bitcoin last December to cover your living expenses for the next year, you might have lost £500 by now. But if you borrowed the loan last September, you might have made £2,000 instead. It's just like playing the lottery."
In the same speech, Carney strongly advocated for central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), believing they have the potential to expand access to banking services and help central banks "combat terrorism and economic crime."
Notably, Carney served as a board member of payment processing company Stripe from February 2021 to January 2025. During his tenure, Stripe launched a series of cryptocurrency payment solutions between 2022 and 2024.
However, Carney's opposition to Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies seems to be more stringent than that of former Prime Minister Trudeau. Trudeau publicly criticized opposition leader Pierre Poilievre's pro-crypto stance in September 2022, calling it "reckless and irresponsible."
Trudeau stated at the time: "Telling people they can avoid inflation by investing in cryptocurrencies is not responsible leadership."
Carney plans to counter Trump's tariff policies
In his victory speech on March 9, Carney directly targeted U.S. President Trump, accusing him of "attacking Canadian families" and attempting to undermine the Canadian economy through tariff policies.
Carney stated, "Trump has imposed baseless tariffs on our products, our sales models, and our livelihoods."
He added that the Canadian government "rightly" retaliated against the U.S. tariff policies and made it clear that these counter-tariffs would remain in place until the U.S. government "gives us the respect we deserve."

Carney also responded to Trump's previous remarks about "making Canada the 51st state of the U.S.," stating, "Canada will never, in any form, become part of the United States."
