The colonial model is the optimal solution for the people of the home country. Taking the British Empire as an example, Britain obtained a vast market and resources through its developed domestic industry, yet had no obligations towards its colonies; this is a parasitic model.
The United States also followed a colonial model in the past, where allies could be seen as dumping markets and production bases for the U.S., while its citizens lived like emperors.
However, the biggest issue with the colonial model is the resistance from the colonies, as seen in the past with Japan and South Korea, and more recently with East Asia.
The imperial model, on the other hand, expands wherever the empire goes, bringing new labor, new resources, and new markets. However, it also becomes a burden for the government, and the original domestic population often ends up being the biggest losers. Yet, the imperial model is useful during imperial rivalries. Therefore, Trump intends to change the model to an imperial one.
China's Belt and Road Initiative also lies between the colonial model and the imperial model. I have always maintained a neutral/reserved attitude because the wealth of the domestic population is being distributed.
