Protocol Activity
In December, a total of 1.4 million Token Metadata assets were created, marking the second highest month in history. Among these, 1.3 million (89%) were fungible tokens, making December the second consecutive month where the number of fungible tokens minted through Metaplex exceeded 1 million. The ongoing creation of Token Metadata assets is attributed to the sustained activity of meme coins and the recent increase in newly launched AI tokens. Since its inception, the total number of fungible tokens created through Token Metadata has surpassed 10.1 million, accounting for over 20% of all Token Metadata assets.
December was another record-breaking month for Core asset creation. A total of 401,000 Core assets were created that month, the highest number ever created in a single month, with a month-over-month increase of 13%.
Overall, in December, creators and developers minted 160 million digital assets through Metaplex, including 158 million compressed NFTs. This marks a 678% increase in the monthly minting volume of compressed NFTs.
In December, 980,000 unique wallets directly signed transactions with the protocol, the highest number of unique signers in a single month, with a month-over-month increase of 12%.
In December, Metaplex was the second largest protocol on Solana by transaction volume and the fifth largest by the number of active wallets.
As of December, the total number of Metaplex collectors reached nearly 85 million unique wallets, with over 25 million wallets added each month.
Developer Platform
Aura
In December, Metaplex's decentralized data network Aura (designed for Solana and SVM) achieved significant growth and performance improvements. Aura now supports processing DAS methods and RPC call read requests on Solana and Eclipse networks.
During December, Aura transitioned from private testing to public testing, with a steady increase in developer adoption. The network processed 40 million read requests from Eclipse and Solana in December, reflecting rapid acceptance and growing demand from developers.
Initial documentation for Aura has been released, providing developers with the resources needed to build responsive applications using Aura on Solana and Eclipse. Additionally, the integration with Triton enhances RPC support for Eclipse developers, allowing them to execute RPC calls and DAS methods through a single endpoint.
Performance has also been a focus, with the average latency for asset retrieval reduced by 80%, down to 97 milliseconds, making Aura the fastest digital asset indexing solution on Solana. Read consistency has reached over 99.9%, ensuring developers can access on-chain data with near-perfect accuracy.
Aura will soon be available through a public gateway user interface (UI). The UI is currently in testing, and interested developers can contact directly for more information. With upcoming additional performance updates and new staking and reward features, Metaplex plans to further expand Aura's capabilities in the first quarter.
AI Agents
In December, the AI ecosystem on the Solana network experienced explosive growth, with AI agent tools and platforms increasingly integrating with Metaplex. These agent tools enhance accessibility to the Metaplex protocol, allowing users to interact with the on-chain economy through simple commands.
SendAI created a stir in the ecosystem with the launch of its Solana agent toolkit, an open-source toolkit for connecting AI agents to Solana. SendAI's agent toolkit utilizes MPL (Metaplex Protocol Library), enabling developers to launch and mint NFTs and fungible tokens supported by Metaplex.
Griffain has also emerged as a leading AI agent platform, allowing users to create core assets and memecoins using the Token Metadata standard.
More integrations are expected in the future, providing new growth opportunities for on-chain activity and protocol adoption.
New Metaplex Website Launch
In December, the new official Metaplex website was officially launched, offering a refreshed experience that showcases the evolution of Metaplex and its expanding role in the ecosystem. The new site provides easier navigation, a dedicated ecosystem page introducing projects built using Metaplex, and in-depth insights into Metaplex's expanding suite of products and services. The site also integrates educational resources, ecosystem news, and governance updates, becoming a hub for all information related to Metaplex.
Core
In December, the total number of digital assets minted by Metaplex Core exceeded 1.5 million, further solidifying its leading position in NFT creation on Solana and SVM.
The integration of new partners further highlights the widespread adoption of Metaplex Core, such as Backpack, which can now display on-chain attributes directly within the wallet. This integration provides players with a new and improved gaming experience, allowing them to view important asset characteristics such as level, health points, and strength directly in their wallets.
Documentation and Developer Guides
In December, we released new resources aimed at helping developers optimize their workflows. A new guide details how to optimize priority fees and compute units, providing strategies to improve on-chain success rates, speed up on-chain processes, and reduce costs.
Additionally, Yuki from the Japanese Metaplex community created a series of video guides covering key tools and features of Metaplex. These resources provide practical demonstrations, enabling developers to utilize Metaplex tools more quickly and effectively.
Metaplex DAO
Metaplex Protocol Fees and MPLX Token Purchase
Last month, we used 12,000 SOL to purchase 8.3 million MPLX (approximately 1% of the total supply) and donated it to the treasury of Metaplex DAO, marking the largest MPLX token purchase to date. This includes 50% of the Metaplex protocol fees from November (7,816 SOL) plus a portion of historical fees (4,184 SOL).
This marks the seventh contribution of MPLX to Metaplex DAO. As previously mentioned, 50% of the Metaplex protocol's monthly fees plus historical fees have been allocated for purchasing MPLX to support decentralized and community-driven governance.
The protocol fees for December were the second highest month ever, generating $3.1 million or 14,869 SOL. This brings the total cumulative fees generated by the protocol throughout its lifecycle to over 174,000 SOL.
DAO Funding Program
For the Metaplex DAO funding program, December was a milestone month as the first list of grantees was announced, driving innovation in the Core and MPL-404 areas. At the program's launch, multiple teams received funding to develop on Metaplex.
One of the outstanding grants was awarded to SILICONS for the development of Sili Launch, a launch platform for NFTs and hybrid DeFi powered by MPL-404. Publique was also selected as one of the first participants in the Metaplex startup program, focusing on leveraging Metaplex technology to expand its narrative ecosystem. Finally, FaenoraVerse received funding to integrate MPL-404 into its roguelite strategy role-playing game. Big Diggas was also chosen as part of this batch, with more details to be announced in the coming weeks.
The Metaplex DAO funding program is actively seeking new applicants. Developers, creators, and projects interested in developing using Core or MPL-404 can apply to join the next batch.
Metaplex Yield Program
In December, the Metaplex DAO approved the "Metaplex Yield Program - Season 1" proposed by Forgd, which aims to allocate 1,000,000 MPLX to enhance on-chain liquidity and reward liquidity providers. This two-month initiative will distribute MPLX across liquidity pools in major Solana DeFi protocols, thereby enhancing trading depth and integration.
This initiative brings new reward opportunities to the Metaplex community and lays the groundwork for deeper DAO participation through on-chain MPLX incentives. At the end of the event, any unused tokens will be returned to the DAO treasury. The program will launch in January, with details on reward distribution to be announced later.
