In ancient times, it was somewhat better; the government's power basically extended to the county level, while the villages relied on clan power for self-governance. Therefore, the folk organizations in ancient China were essentially clans.

Clans are also good at establishing order; with rules regarding generations and legitimate heirs, everyone clearly understands their position. The power of clans is limited to a single village and rarely extends beyond that. Outside of their own village, there are hometown associations, but the binding force of these associations is relatively weak.

The cross-regional powers mainly consist of cults and organized crime. The reason they are called "cults" is that they are essentially no different from legitimate religions; they just haven't gained traction, so they are labeled as cults. The reason they haven't gained traction is still due to the government's strong power, which has essentially prevented cults from succeeding. From Zhang Jiao of Taoism to the Five Pecks of Rice, to the White Lotus Sect of Buddhism, and to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom of Christianity, all have been defeated by the government. In fact, it wasn't the government that defeated them, but rather the preceding clan power that overcame them.

Finally, there is organized crime, which primarily thrives in urban areas. This can also be seen as a blank area for clan power.

So, in ancient times, the forces were quite clear: two superpowers and two strong powers: the government, clans, cults, and organized crime.

So when you ask why Chinese people do not unite after going abroad, it's actually all wrong. Chinese organized crime is quite powerful in Southeast Asia! The Chinese cult Falun Gong also has significant influence. 😂
