When anything becomes intertwined with quantum, it seems to be instantly imbued with a strong sense of futurism and mystery. Quantum biology is no exception.

This month, the Quantum Biology DAO raised 1,724.02 WETH in a token auction on BIO Protocol, valued at approximately $6.886 million at the time, far exceeding its original target, achieving 1,344.74% of the fundraising goal.

The auction attracted 1,032 bids, with 635 successful transactions. If we consider these successful bidding addresses as independent investors, each investor contributed an average of over 2.7 ETH (approximately $10,840 at the time). Notably, one address successfully invested as much as 71.6 ETH in a single transaction. Additionally, another investor expressed an investment intention of up to 88 ETH in one transaction; unfortunately, their bid did not reach the final transaction price, and they were unable to acquire the tokens.

So, what exactly is this "Quantum Biology DAO" with an average investment of over $10,000 per person? What mysteries and prospects does the field of quantum biology, which it aims to promote, hold?

What is Quantum Biology DAO?

According to the article "The Future of Quantum Biology" published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, quantum biology primarily explores processes in living organisms that cannot be accurately described by classical physics laws. Typical biological processes include the transfer of electrons and/or vibrational energy, as well as examples like electron transfer and the magnetic field effects in bird migration. Quantum effects manifest as long-distance effects (such as electron and proton tunneling), characterized by temperature dependence, magnetic field effects, participation of superposition (or delocalized) states, and resonance effects. Quantum biology may also have a significant impact on many technologies, including sensing, health, environment, and information technology.

Quantum Biology DAO (abbreviated as QuantumBioDAO) also believes that quantum biology has a tremendous potential impact on health and longevity, biomanufacturing, and the pharmaceutical industry. QuantumBioDAO has discovered that weak magnetic field effects in biology can be measured, and these weak magnetic fields can influence DNA repair, cellular oxidation (a key mechanism for maintaining health), and the rate of cell division (a core mechanism of biomanufacturing).

In the view of QuantumBioDAO, the influence of quantum biology is expected to further expand into other fields and industries in the future. By appropriately configuring magnetic fields, we can make space travel safer and even nurture life on other planets while ensuring food supply. At the same time, the long-lived quantum states that exist stably at room temperature in biology will inspire us to build more advanced quantum computers.

What QuantumBioDAO is doing is bridging the gap between basic science and traditional venture capital, building a bridge between experts in the field and the public, and actively engaging in educational efforts to demonstrate the close connections and importance of quantum biology to the public, thereby attracting more attention and funding into this field.

According to QuantumBioDAO's vision, it also plans to support the research and development of new quantum instruments. In particular, an optical microscope with nanosecond time resolution and optical detection magnetic resonance capabilities can directly detect the electronic spin superposition states inside cells without damaging them. Additionally, QuantumBioDAO aims to create and capture valuable IP and accelerate the development of quantum biology, aiding the launch of a series of quantum biology startups.

Quantum Biology DAO Ecosystem

The Quantum Biology ecosystem consists of three autonomous entities: the Quantum Biology Institute (Research Institute), Quantum Biology DAO, and Quantum Biology Incubator.

The Quantum Biology Institute, a nonprofit organization based in California, aims to confirm that biological processes operate at the quantum level and lay the knowledge foundation for future research and commercialization.

Quantum Biology DAO is legally a nonprofit association (Verein) based in Switzerland, dedicated to promoting basic scientific research in quantum biology, building a bridge connecting the research institute and incubator, and enhancing communication and connection between technical experts in the field and the public. Quantum Biology DAO may retain relevant intellectual property rights or fund the research and development of instruments and equipment, granting usage licenses to multiple parties.

The Quantum Biology Incubator focuses on incubating startups aimed at commercializing quantum biology research results, with the goal of becoming the preferred provider of instruments and laboratory space for startups in the field of quantum biology. Although the Quantum Biology Incubator has not yet been established, to coordinate incentives more effectively, the institute and DAO plan to hold a portion of the shares upon its establishment. This way, any successful graduation from the incubator will bring financial returns to the institute and DAO, ultimately promoting complete self-sufficiency.

QuantumBioDAO Token Design

In terms of token economics design, the total supply of QBIO tokens is set at 1 billion. Of this, 20% of the tokens are allocated to the core team, which will be fully locked for one year and gradually released over eight years; 7% of the tokens are allocated to service providers with no release period. Additionally, 55% of the tokens are allocated to the treasury; 15% of the tokens are used for community auctions, also with no release period; the remaining 3% are designated as community incentives.

As mentioned earlier, QuantumBioDAO successfully held a community auction on BIO Protocol, raising a total of 1,724.02 WETH, attracting 635 addresses to participate successfully. This means that 150 million tokens will be distributed to these 635 successful auction addresses. The closing price of the auction was 0.00001149 WETH per QBIO, which, based on the current WETH price of $3,300, translates to a unit price of $0.03447 per QBIO.

Regarding the 3% community incentive portion, QuantumBioDAO stated that it will develop a specific incentive plan after the token auction ends, taking into account the actual situation and needs of the community.

Where Does QuantumBioDAO's Revenue Come From?

Currently, QuantumBioDAO's main revenue comes from the aforementioned community auction activities. Subsequently, if additional tokens are sold through the DAO governance mechanism, more funds can be raised.

Of course, token sales are just the tip of the iceberg for QuantumBioDAO's revenue diversification. QuantumBioDAO will also explore various other profit models, such as IP licensing, which will cover a wide range of fields, including but not limited to IP related to magnetic field configurations, quantum biology instruments, licensed or anonymized patient data, or medical interventions processed and compiled by the DAO.

Additionally, QuantumBioDAO plans to support the construction of specific instruments such as quantum microscopes and plug-and-play low magnetic field rooms (facilitating the study of weak magnetic field effects), with the hope of achieving profitability through the sale or licensing of these instruments.

It is worth mentioning that the commercial deployment of the incubator under QuantumBioDAO will also inject new vitality into the DAO's treasury. Through the successful operation of the incubator and the deployment of commercial projects, QuantumBioDAO is expected to achieve sustained growth and diversification of revenue.

QuantumBioDAO Roadmap

Conclusion

Longevity and decentralized science (DeSci) are by no means exclusive territories of the wealthy; they are gradually becoming more common public topics, paving the way for more people to participate in the democratization of science. However, we must recognize that the research complexity in these fields is high, experimental techniques face numerous challenges, and scientific discoveries often follow a gradual path. Therefore, their in-depth development undoubtedly requires more ample time.
