Polymer Labs has officially launched Polymer Hub, a real-time interoperability protocol for connecting all Ethereum Rollups. By transmitting messages, states, and logs through IBC primitives (similar to Web2's TCP/IP), Polymer Hub can verify and store the header information of all connected Rollups, allowing applications to validate any state across Rollups with significantly reduced overhead.
In the past, the Rollup/L2 ecosystem could typically only connect within its own closed environment; however, with Polymer, Rollups can now communicate across ecosystems and coordinate at the speed of block generation. Compared to existing solutions, this protocol offers significant improvements in latency, bandwidth, and cost for cross-chain communication.
Polymer's goal is to make cross-chain interoperability as fast, efficient, and cost-effective as block space, thereby helping Ethereum applications scale to the next million users.
Enhancing Bandwidth, Reducing Latency
Real-time, high-throughput Rollups are on the horizon, but existing interoperability protocols (such as peer-to-peer and centralized radiation models) were not designed to support the dense network traffic of hundreds of Rollups. The team points out that existing solutions are too slow and expensive for the next generation of applications on Ethereum. As a new era approaches, interoperability solutions must improve in speed and efficiency. Real-time applications require real-time interoperability.
Polymer is committed to building the fastest and most effective interoperability protocol for the next generation of Rollups (such as MegaETH). The Hub delivers messages in real-time through pre-confirmation by sorters, ensuring that the latency of cross-chain communication can accommodate the millisecond block times of these Rollups. Polymer also leverages EigenDA to expand cross-Rollup bandwidth to support on-chain data-intensive applications.
“Real-time capability, the ability to respond to inputs with ultra-low latency at scale, will make truly groundbreaking decentralized applications possible. Preparing the infrastructure stack for this revolution will be a joint effort, where Polymer's real-time interoperability will play a key role.”
--Lei Yang (Co-founder and CTO of MegaETH)
Various technologies such as shared sorters and ecosystem-native interoperability networks will partition Ethereum into Rollup clusters; however, these clusters can achieve interoperability within minutes through Polymer Hub's one-to-many architecture, without waiting for months. Polymer Hub is also the first interoperability solution to provide reorganization protection. This allows token bridges and solving networks to securely settle cross-chain transactions in milliseconds and automatically roll back when deviating from Ethereum L1 history.
Future Outlook
Next-generation on-chain applications will draw from the architecture of cloud applications: Rollups becoming new microservices, and AVSs becoming new infrastructure services. To achieve horizontal scaling on-chain, cross-chain infrastructure must possess low latency, high bandwidth, and economical scalability.
The Polymer team is dedicated to enhancing interoperability performance to build competitive new categories of applications on-chain, such as high-throughput e-commerce and ride-sharing.
“Building interoperability applications that do not sacrifice cost or latency is a prerequisite for making cryptocurrency practical again. In large-scale applications, this connection layer needs to be as robust and secure as the Ethereum base layer, and Polymer is uncompromising in realizing this vision.” Vikram Arun (Co-founder and CEO of Superform Labs).
Starting with the OP stack, Polymer plans to bring real-time interoperability to all Rollup ecosystems on Ethereum, providing fast and cost-effective scaling for future applications.
